Do environmental, social, and governance programs create shareholder value? According to a December 2008 McKinsey survey of 238 finance executives and investment professionals from a wide range of industries and regions, these programs do create shareholder value. The current economic turmoil has increased the immediate importance of governance programs and decreased that of environmental and social programs. However, overwhelming majorities of professionals surveyed attributed substantial long-term importance to all three types of programs.
